Vineyards and philosophy
Perusini vinifies exclusively grapes from the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC. The estate’s vineyards are located on terraced hillsides. The soil consists mainly of Eocene marl (ponca in Friulian), a fossil clay. The vines are trained using rigorous systems (Guyot or double-arched cane) and yield a low production per vine.
There has always been a strong belief that a great wine begins in the vineyard. The estate covers 72 hectares. We cultivate 24 hectares of our own vines and rely on suppliers for an additional 8 hectares. The care devoted to the land is followed by meticulous handling of the grapes in the winery. The passion that defined the company in the past now guides the family team in a management style that combines a love of tradition with the pursuit of innovative winemaking methods learned through recent university studies.
The study of native grape varieties that has defined the estate over the last three generations, along with the great care we devote to our vineyards, enables us to produce wines that best express each variety in our territory.
Our philosophy is to produce wines that authentically convey the character of the grapes and the personality of each vintage.
We like the kind of asymmetry that breaks the mold and creates beauty, the tonal nuance that gives places their identity. We appreciate biodiversity — what is neither standardized nor standardizable. We believe that small estates like ours must preserve the flavors of the “genius loci”, not by chance a deity for the ancients. To us, the richness of European culture lies in the polyphony of voices from its different regions.
With this same spirit, Giacomo Perusini reselected Picolit in the early 1900s, and Giampaolo Perusini did the same with Ribolla Gialla. With this spirit we created our Merlot Black Label: in a joint project with the University of Udine, we identified, selected, and replanted several ancient clones that have been on the estate for more than 100 years. From the very beginning, we have combined passion and scientific study to achieve the best possible results.
